On Friday 24th August, WJF Technical Support LTD not only sponsored the 2018 ICoTA Golf Challenge but also had a team of four compete. The competition was played to Texas scramble rules, Texas Scramble is a form of team competition in golf. In the purest, simplest form of Texas Scramble all members of the team – teams are normally of 3 or 4 players – tee off. Then one of these drives is chosen to be used for the next shot and all members of the team place their balls where the chosen drive ended up, and all the team play a second shot from this spot.
From these second shots, one is chosen, and all play a third shot from there – and so on until the ball is holed. Each team returns one score for each hole and the team with the lowest score for the round wins.
It was played on the Swailend Course of Newmachar Golf Club, which is one of two courses at the club, the other being Hawkshill. The course was presented by the greenkeeping staff in immaculate condition, particularly considering the weather over the last few months.
Along with entering a team, we donated a couple of prizes (some umbrellas and some golf balls), in addition to sponsoring the practice putting green.
Our team consisted of:
- Martin McCaffrey (handicap 12)
- David Mathieson (handicap 8)
- Les Burr (handicap 14)
- Scott Sutherland (handicap 5)
Unfortunately, although playing very well from tee to green, our putting just wasn’t good enough to finish in the prizes, maybe we should have spent more time on the WJF sponsored practice putting green.
We ultimately finished with a bogey free, nett score of 60.1, which was good but not good enough, but at least we were all off SGU recognised handicaps.
Thanks to Newmachar Golf Club staff for hosting a great event and to Mearns & Gill for once again organising it and all the other sponsors and teams.
